In many villages of Limnos, in the courtyards of the mansions, but also in public areas, you will find huge jars buried in the land, from which protrudes substantially only their rim and their round lid of stone. People used those jars for the storage of wine and food in general such as pulses, wheat and olive oil. It was a combination of a cellar and a fridge ... In the case of the wine, as they were good viticulturers, used to seal the rims of the jar with plaster and resin in order to avoid oxidation. When the jars were in a public place, the owners used to write their name with paint on the stone lid. In the village Romanou, you will see the greatest number of jars being in a public place.
